October Seafood Export Stats: Salmon and Cod Significantly Drop

The October seafood export statistics (preliminary figures) by the Japan Fish Traders Association reports that the export quantities of bonito and saury exhibited drastic increases in the month of October; however salmon, trout, and cod slumped, resulting in the total amount of 44,572 tons, or 71 percent, compared to the same month last year.


Despite increases in saury, 5,254 tons (171 percent, compared to the same month last year); scallop, 1,394 tons (141 percent); and bonito, 2,937 tons (114 percent) in October, decreases in salmon/trout, 7,827 tons (51 percent), cod, 3,081 tons (37 percent), and mackerel, 5,254 tons (61%), negatively affected the total export sum. An expected growth of the amount of chum salmon never took place. The accumulated export sum was 89 percent, exhibiting a decline.


In the month of October, the export amount registered \16.8 billion, or 81 percent, in comparison to the same month of the previous year. Despite upward moves of saury, \406.98 million (157 percent, contrasted to the same month last year), and scallop, \1.88556 billion (152 percent) in October, salmon/trout, \2.00132 billion (53%) and cod, \598.28 million (51 percent) fell sharply, projecting the negative effect on the overall number. The accumulated export amount declined to \178.7 billion, or 93 percent, in comparison to the previous year.
