May Seafood Exports Jump 80% to 60K Tons

Trade statistics (preliminary) released June 27 by the Ministry of Finance indicated that seafood (fishmeal included) exported in May numbered 60,449 tons, up 78.4 percent. Even though the average unit price plunged 11.4 percent, the total value rose 58.1 percent, amounting to 17.838 billion yen.
Following a trend in April, scallop and bonito doubled their amounts by 165.4 percent and 137.5 percent respectively, compared with the same month in the previous year. Mackerel gained 63.2 percent. Yellowfin tuna displayed a five-fold increase and cod soared 22.8 percent. Salmon and trout followed suite and ended in 3.5 times more than last year.
May Seafood Imports Plunge 9% to 219K Tons

The aggregate amount of seafood imported in the month of May, which included fishmeal, released by the International Seafood Distribution Council, added up to 218,957 tons, or down 8.6 percent over the same month last year. Salmon and trout, about 24,000 tons of which was shipped in a year ago, experienced a 30 percent fall, while pollack surimi, shrimp, crab, and octopus hiked. The average unit price soared 10.1 percent. The total value stayed unchanged at 136.8 billion yen, edging up 0.7 percent.
Salmon and trout exhibited a significant drop of 33 percent to 16,018 tons. Chilean coho salmon plummeted 24 percent, totaling 6,333 tons, and the unit price also plunged 20 percent.
Big-eye tuna (7,260 tons) and yellowfin tuna (4,811 tons) noticeably fell by 29.1 percent and 11.3 percent respectively.
With a 10 percent plunge in the unit price, 12,210 tons of pollack surimi was imported, which was up 42.6 percent from the previous year. Shishamo smelt increased 20.3 percent to 5,162 tons. Crab (4,437 tons) and octopus (5,173 tons) also jumped 15.1 percent and 21.9 percent respectively.
The main item of frozen shrimp came to 15,581 tons, up 9.1 percent, and the unit price spiked 27.6 percent.
