March Supermarket Sales Jump 9.4%

April 25, 2014

According to the stats announced April 21 by the Japan Chain Stores Association, on a like-for-like basis turnover jumped 9.4 percent for the month of March. The growth was attributable to last minute rush demand prior to an increase in the consumption tax. Foodstuff marked a 5.7 percent rise, totaling JPY 122 billion (€861 million/$1.19 billion).

In the seafood department, in addition to fresh fish such as tuna and horse mackerel and assorted sashimi, salted-dried items as dried-dressed fish and dried young sardine moved favorably; however, bonito, amberjack, eel, and common orient clam exhibited lackluster sales.
